The Strategic Neighborhood Fund is a partnership between the City of Detroit, Invest Detroit, neighborhood residents and corporate donors. The fund aims improve parks, streetscapes, commercial corridor development, and stabilizing affordable single-family home. Jefferson Chalmers is a neighborhood that will benefit from the fund.
Jefferson Chalmers has a plan in place to revitalize the neighborhood with money from the fund. Some of the key developments are Alfred Brush Ford Park, Guyton Elementary School, and the Corner of E. Jefferson and PIper.
Penske Corp. has invested 5 million dollars into the strategic fund for the purpose of fixing the Lenox Community Center at Alfred Brush Ford Park. The project is planned to start this March with a grand open in September 2020. The residents of Jefferson Chalmers are behind the revitalization of the Lenox Center.
Guyton Elementary School is a vacant school in the middle of Jefferson Chalmers. The school is going to be converted into a community center and about 40 affordable housing units. This site takes up an entire block and will bring life back into the neighborhood.
The Jefferson Chalmers framework plans to build a mix-use development at the corner of E. Jefferson and Piper. A grocery store will be the anchor store for the 14 acre lot with new apartments being development along E Jefferson, Piper, and Newport.
